FAQ's
Do I need previous experience?
Although experience is desired, it is not essential as we provide training.
Can I volunteer for 2 weeks instead?
No. Although much can be achieved in 2 weeks, this is not stable enough for LFL especially if we need to spend lots of time providing training.
I want to share a dorm/room with my friend, is this possible?
Let us know in advance via email and we’ll try our best to accommodate you. If you are mixed sex then we recommend a private room with twin beds as there are no mixed dorms on camp.
Do you accept couples?
Providing there is space then of course, just opt for a private room and we can provide a double bed.
Is there phone reception and wi-fi?
Yes there is phone reception but currently no wi-fi on camp. One of the hotels might let you use their wi-fi if you book a tour with them or purchase food for example.
Can I bring my phone and other electronic items?
Yes, there are many charge points on camp. We are not responsible for any damages or thefts so bring such items at your own risk. For ease of mind, all rooms are lockable and anyone caught stealing will be kicked off the program (which would be a first).
Can I withdraw cash here?
No. There are no banking facilities (not even in Drake) so please bring enough cash to cover your volunteer fees and other things like treats and return transport. The shops and many hotels/hostels in Drake accept cards and you can pay for local tours via card or even Paypal too.
I really like it here and want to extend my stay, is this possible and how do I pay?
This is great news and very possible should there be space. Payment would be made via cash or Paypal.
I need to cancel, do I get a refund?
Please have all your preparations in order before securing a place (holiday permission etc) as breaking commitment can lead to negative effects on the turtles and local families, especially if short notice is given.
However, we understand circumstances can suddenly change. A full refund will be given if you provide 14+ days’ notice in advance via email. If you provide less notice (0-13 days) the full deposit of $200 will NOT be refunded.
I’m backpacking and have fallen behind schedule; can I join LFL next month instead?
This is a tricky one, however, you have committed to a date therefor the responsibility of arriving here on time is yours. Consequently, you could lose your place should there not be enough space and possibly deposit if not enough notice has been given (14 days +). Of course, we would try our best to accommodate you.
Falling behind one or two days is acceptable but please let us know via email immediately.
I’ve secured 5 weeks but might leave after 3 if I find things difficult, is this ok? If you have concerns like this or feel undecided we recommend securing 3 weeks (minimum stay) with a view to extending if you like it. Breaking commitment can often lead to negative effects on the turtles, local families on camp, school programs and co-volunteers.
Do I need vaccinations? You won’t catch anything from the turtles but please consult your doctor to discuss what is recommended for Costa Rica in general.
Should I take out insurance?
Yes, this is highly recommended. Whether it’s a 2 day trip to Paris or 1 week in the Caribbean, insurance is important. Many budget insurance companies cover voluntary/animal/conservation work.
How far is the nearest medical centre/hospital?
There is a public clinic in Drake town which is a 10 minute boat ride or 80 minute walk from camp that caters for general sicknesses and minor injuries. The nearest hospital is 1hr 20 away in Palmar Norte reachable by boat then car. There is also a helicopter pad near to camp for critical emergency situations.
I don’t have time to volunteer but I want to help LFL, how?
Thank you for feeling passionate about conservation like we do. We gratefully accept donations via Paypal which contribute to hatchery equipment and research. Alternatively you can participate in beach clean ups near your home, recycle plastics and spread the word.
Will I see plenty of Wildlife? We are sited by the jungle adjacent to Corcovardo National Park which is the most biological place in Costa Rica….yes, you will see wildlife. Check out our image GALLERY.
Are any of these creatures dangerous?
Yes. If bitten by a Ferdalance snake for example, seek medical attention immediately for an anti-venom injection. Snakes do not randomly strike at people, however they will defend themselves if accidentally stood on…………so watch your step.
Alternatively, if you are allergic to certain insect bites then this can be dangerous so please bring personal specialist medication.
What should I do if I spot a snake, animal or critter? Please treat all with caution and respect unless you know what you’re dealing with. Leave it alone.
Do you cater for vegetarians? Yes.
Are there any shops nearby? If the onsite camp shop is missing your favourite treat, Drake will be the best place for wider choice. It’s an 80 minute walk from camp or 10 minute boat ride.
Are there any lockers? Yes for small valuable items only, please bring your own padlock.
Do I really need waterproof clothes/footwear?
In theory no but we highly suggest you bring waterproof items for your own comfort as sudden downpours are common in every season.
